Now that the colder temperatures are here there is still plenty of exercise to do. Perhaps a gym membership for the holidays or a new exercise CD. I still feel it is important to get out into the sun shine and allow the sun to provide us with some much needed vitamin D and some “winter” warmth. There are many parks and trails that are great for getting outside and getting some exercise. Remember even in the cold weather you need to stay hydrated and eat warming, filling foods such as whole grains. Remember eat fresh, eat whole food and eat local.
Another hot summer is upon us. This can of course effect our ability to get outside and exercise. But it does not have to stop us. Many people got up early today and where pacing themselves at the Cooper River. It was great to see so many people walking ,running, biking or doing water sports. What did they all have in common? While movement was of course what we were all doing thee was the addition of hydration.
People were carrying water bottles, waist harness carrying fluids and I even saw more then my share of cars with ice chests containing refreshing juices and electrolyte drinks.
Remember at any temperature while exercising we all must stay hydrated. During the hot months it is even more important to focus on your hydration . Consider drinking fluids before, during and after exercise. If the heat is to much consider early morning or late evening times when the sun is not so hot. If all else fails workout indoors where the climate can be controlled.
Above all, keep moving.
It seems the nice weather is bringing out the crowds. While out running this am, there was many people enjoying the same. There where people of all ages, races , and fitness levels. The thing that we all had in common was that we were all moving. All trying to enjoy life, sunshine and the feeling of fitness. Why don’t the rest of you come join the fun. If you are more competitive or need some challenge or structure goggle 5K races in South Jersey and get involved.
The 8th Annual Delaware County PA Sheriff’s Reserve Unit Run for Scholarships will be held on Sunday June 9th 2013. Come on out and meet us and join in on the fun, the run and the sun. There is a 5 k run and there is a 1.5 mile walk. (Many of us will be walking the 5 k). The fun begins a 9 AM. For more information go to www.dcpsru.org Hope to see you there.
Common injuries occur when you are training to lose weight. The stress on the knees or ankles can sometimes cause sprains and strains to the joints. Occasionally there is a tear of a ligament. Not knowing what is wrong is scary and frustrating. The first thing to do is to get a good medical examination of your injured area. Once your injury has been determined, ask your health practitioner what exercise would be allowed for your over all health as well as perhaps helping your injury. Think of exercises like yoga. low impact aerobics and possibly swimming to keep you safe and in the exercise mode while healing from your injury.
